I'd like to be able to script something like that. 
However, the truth about suns is: they are disks, not spheres. Which means they can't erupt into the third dimension.

You kind of can, in a 'boring' looking way.
On the nova mission you will get the sun's corona to flare up at irregular intervals, and it does make sun skimming a more 'interesting' proposition than usual...
