Can someone explain to me why "Wally" is "Waldo" in North America*? To avoid confusion with Where's Wall-E?


*Excluding French Canadians, they don't count. Hehe.

Can someone explain to me why "Wally" is "Waldo" in North America*?

He has a different name in most countries, apparently… in Sweden, he’s Hugo, for instance.

Some non-English speaking countries I can understand since "Wally" could potentially have a completely different meaning or not really be well understood, or even pronounceable in some places (or just sound plain cr@p when combined with "where" in the native tongue).

It's no big deal I guess, just a little puzzling to me when other brandnames/trademarks go unchanged the world over. (McDonalds and Coca Cola are probably about as universal as it gets... even the Martians have heard of them!).
