inexplicable freezes
Occasionally Oolite freezes my complete system (MacBook Pro, 2 GHz Core Duo, 1.5 GB Ram, ATI Radeon X1600). It just happened just after targetting a hostile pirate (I had already killed his three companions). No other suspicious activities. 71 entities in the system, no reason why something should have been added in that very moment.
There's nothing at all in latest.log, nothing at all in console.log or system.log, nothing at all in Oolite.crash.log.
The system freezes completely. I still can move the mouse, but I cannot click on anything, which means that I cannot leave Oolite.app and return to the finder or another application. No keypresses do anything. I cannot even open the close-immediately window via alt-cmd-esc, or switch to another application via cmd-tab. No response at all, except that the mouse pointer is still moving. The only way out is to force a shut-down through pressing the on/off-button for a couple of seconds.
The same has happened occasionally with various Oolite versions. I just never reported it here.
Obviously something very bad is happening. You shouldn't be forced to shut down your computer without being able to save the contents of other windows.
Are there other logs which may contain helpful information and which I should look into? I would be happy to do that and post anything I can find.

I had another freeze like the one mentioned (still able to move the mouse pointer, but nothing else; only force-shut of the computer helps), only this time Oolite wasn't involved at all.
But, this time a got an entry in the system log, and it seems to be a graphics card issue. Just in case it may help to resolve the issue I had with Oolite (and anybody is interested), I post the relevant part of the log:

I have not been able to find much info on this. But it does seem to be something that is reported in the online forums for a number of applications (all games, I think).
The most helpful thread I found was this, which seems to suggest its a hardware hang http://www.mailinglistarchive.com/html/ ... 00067.html

UPDATE: It seems my GPU is going down.
I still get the occasional freezes which still seem to be GPU-related (about once or twice a week). And for a couple of days now I occasionally get a randomly multi-coloured horizontal line, two pixels high, in the active window. It can happen in any application, even in the finder. At least once it was accompanied by a freeze shortly thereafter.
So I am slowly but surely driven to the question: is it worth the while to get a new graphics card (and which one?) for my early 2006 first generation MacBook Pro 15''? Or should I not bother with that and look for a new computer in the first place?
One could argue that a four-and-a-half years life span is not too bad for a laptop, especially regarding the conditions it was working in. On the other hand was its predecessor (a 1999 first generation iBook Blueberry) only retired after seven years without any hardware problem, but simply because it couldn't cope with OS X 10.4 anymore (too little RAM and too small a HD). I guess its battery is dead now, but other than that I am sure I could start it right now and work on OS X 10.3.9 instantly (it just won't run Oolite, at least not with a frame rate above 4 FPS, and that's vanilla Oolite; which was by the way one (minor) reason for its retirement).
I haven't followed the Mac market lately. Hypothetically speaking, if I wanted to buy a new MacBook Pro, would I do it now, or is a model change/upgrade due soon, so I should wait just a little?

Is the old iBook graphically underpowered? I have a crazy notion that you could install a non-OS X operating system on it (a more lightweight one) and perhaps squeeze some extra mileage out of it. However, there are two problems with that:
1. If the graphics chipset sucks then no operating system is going to be able to get around that.
2. Assuming it's a PowerPC processor and not x86 architecture, trying to find a lightweight (Linux) OS that supports that architecture is quite a challenge these days.
Just tossing it out there though... as I have an unhealthy obsession with refusing to let old hardware die gracefully.
[edit]I forgot to add that if it were possible then it would be a very cheap solution to the problem, even if it was just a temporary stop-gap.

The current model was released in April, I would guess it's another 6 months or so before new models are being introduced. But that's just me...Commander McLane wrote:Hypothetically speaking, if I wanted to buy a new MacBook Pro, would I do it now, or is a model change/upgrade due soon, so I should wait just a little?

According to Wikipedia it's got a 4 MB ATI Rage Mobility AGP 2x, which was probably not bad at the time (the iBook came with the games Nanosaur and that other one with the bug pre-installed), but maybe somewhat underpowered compared to newer models.Darkbee wrote:Is the old iBook graphically underpowered?
Also, it came with 32MB RAM, which I maxed out to 288MB (more is impossible) when I jumped from OS 8.6 all the way up to Panther (OS X 10.3), at which time I also gave it a bigger HD (32GB IIRC, compared to the original 3.2GB).
Still, current OS tend to be more resource-hungry than that, I think.

Perhaps the better question would have been: Is the graphics card/chipset enough to run Oolite? I think you're really pushing it with a 4MB chipset but I guess it's doable.Commander McLane wrote:According to Wikipedia it's got a 4 MB ATI Rage Mobility AGP 2x, which was probably not bad at the time (the iBook came with the games Nanosaur and that other one with the bug pre-installed), but maybe somewhat underpowered compared to newer models.Darkbee wrote:Is the old iBook graphically underpowered?

I'm not an expert on Macs so I can't figure out if the iBook is "old world" or "new world" but there are some old world Linux options if the iBook is a PowerPC processor (which I'm fairly confident in saying it is). If it's new world then you have vastly more options open to you (although compared to x86 still very thin). Running Debian with LXDE (desktop environment) would probably get you some fair mileage. 288MB should be adequate to run a lightweight Linux distribution with reasonable performance. Of course it all depends on how comfortable you are tinkering around, and there could still be dependancy/hardware support issues. I guess since IntelMacs, PowerPCs are a dying breed.
Anyway, this might all seem rather pointlessly time-consuming to you. If so, feel free to ignore my ramblings.

I have no actual plans to re-activate the iBook (maybe in a couple of years, when its clamshell and the cool handle for carrying it are sufficiently retro? ), so please don't spend too many thoughts on it.
Since yesterday I have made a little market analysis (thanks to the interwebs) of the MacBook Pro market and found out that I can get the entry model for a little less money than I paid for my current laptop four-and-a-half years ago. The main question becomes: can I live with occasional freezes and resets and wait until next year, or does something have to happen earlier? Right now I think that a little waiting won't hurt, so for the time being everything stays like it is.
One point I am a little reluctant about is the new in-built batteries. I like the prospect of having considerably more battery life (even if I don't expect the marketing numbers to be true; I never got more than 2 1/2 to 3 hours out of the model which was advertised with 5 to 6 hours). But on the other hand I am very aware of memory effect and capacity loss. My current laptop is running on the third battery now, and every time I have seen a steady loss of capacity starting after around 100 load cycles (current battery: original capacity 5800 mAh, current capacity about 4700 mAh after 224 load cycles). So I am wary about the non-replaceble battery type, even if it comes with a higher original capacity. I'd be interested in other people's experiences with non-replaceble batteries in laptops.

If you're considering the entry level model then you might want to take a look at the new MacBook Air as well--according to performance tests done by MacWorld it is faster, not the least thanks to its SSD instead of HDD.Commander McLane wrote:Since yesterday I have made a little market analysis (thanks to the interwebs) of the MacBook Pro market and found out that I can get the entry model for a little less money than I paid for my current laptop four-and-a-half years ago.

If the freezes are due to a failing graphics card, then you might not be the one choosing the time-frame.
The one thing I know about technology is that it's obsolete the second you buy it so I wouldn't get too caught up on the latest and greatest. Buy what you can afford, when you can afford it at the time that is right for you.
See you in 4 years for the next installment of this thread... (when you latest and greatest is woefully obsolete)
