Cannot destroy Hive in Cataclysm

Post by davcefai »

I am having problems with the Hive mission in Cataclysm.

First of all, if I try to avoid the battle and go straight to the Hive, Oolite crashes - just disappears. OTOH if I take part in the battle until all the aliens are destroyed then I can enter the Hive.

I get in close to the rotating spikey thing which I assume is the target and zap it with my military lasers till I'm bored. Nothing happens. I keep turning my ship so that i use all 4 lasers in turn.

Can anybody help please?

I definitely know that it is impossible with 2 military lasers but 3 it should in theory be possible. With 4 military lasers it should not be a big problem. Normally the core exploded at the end of my second turn. (after 8 salvos total). But regeneration of the core is very fast, so turns have to be very speedy and firing must be immediately accurate without any pause.

Like Eric said: firing you four military lasers only once per direction just won't crack it. You have to turn several times, and as quick as possible.

Oh, and one friendly word of advice: once you've done it, get the hell out as quickly as possible.

But I have no idea what could cause the crashes. Need more information. A log would be helpful.

I have a twin core AMD 5400+ CPU but a middle-of-the-road graphics card (NVidia 8600).

It seems to me that I simply cannot turn fast enough to pour enough energy into the core.

So I downgraded the recharge rate of the core. I reckoned that if I had got that far, it wasn't really cheating. :)

On the other hand there do not seem to have been any other complaints like mine so I may simply be not nimble enough to do the job properly.

Thanks for the help.

For those of us with Nvidia GF6600GT Ultras, 8600s God-like in terms of performance.

Just a thought… when you say ‘turn the ship’, are you using the yaw function (‘,’ and ‘.’) to turn?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Yes, I am using the yaw function. I'm wondering if, for some reason, my framerate is too low. Is it Ctrl-F to display it?
