Oolite crashing...

Post by Belgarath »

I have been playing Oolite for a while now, but have always had this problem with it crashing randomly.
I just got me a new laptop and was hoping the crashing would be over with new hardware, but no.

I have tried playing Oolite without any OXP installed, didn't help.

It always crashes with the following message:
AppName: oolite.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: ig4icd32.dll
ModVer: 6.14.10.5248 Offset: 008425a0

The error mesage that Windows XPO wants to send to MS reads as follows:

Please post the Latest.log file following a crash. This file is accessible from the Oolite file group in the Start Menu. Full system specs would be good to have, too.

If you are playing with speech on, try turning it off and see if this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
The laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S6420, Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, graphics build in the GM45 chipset.
I am using a joystick now, a CH Flighstick, but also had the crashes when just flying with keyboard.

Disabling speech did not make a difference.

The Latest.log file is so big, I would have to be split in to 10 parts to post here, so I uploaded it to my server as a txt file.
Here it can be downloaded: http://www.busch.nu/files/latest.txt

Thanks for taking the time to look through it.

Firstly you've got several OXPs installed twice:

adck_gold_cobra.oxp
Blackjacksbullion js v1.24.oxp
BountyScannerv1.07.oxp
PAG_oldships_v2.oxp
RoC.oxp
Ste3cV1.4.oxp

which probably won't help and I have wondered in the past if this causes some glitches (it has seemed to make my system more unstable with OXPs installed this way, as it's not how it's supposed to be).

In your system you have AddOns/<folder>.oxp/<folder>.oxp/<OXP> where you should have Addons/<folder>.oxp/<OXP> where <folder> is the OXP name (adck_gold_cobra etc) and <OXP> are the actual OXP folders (Config, AIs, Textures, Models, Scripts etc).

Secondly you have a lot of outdated OXPs which aren't fully compatible with 1.74 (hence all the depreciation warnings and shader errors). Wherever you see such an error in the log, go to the wiki and see if there's an updated version of the OXP in question. If so, grab a copy and update.

There's nothing in the log that looks particularly likely to cause a crash, but by updating everything it'll get rid of some of the noise and should help with the resolution.

Thargoid,
I did likeyou suggested, corrected the directory errors, updated the oxps to 1.74 and deleted the ones that were not compatible.
Played a bit and Oolite crashed again, the latest.log is clean as far as I can see:

Still one OXP installed twice (RoC.oxp) and probably another one (I don't know whether marrett_voll_b.oxp runs along with marrett_voll.oxp, or is a replacement of the latter).

What is "Test" among the scripts? It has no version number, so it is either a legacy script, or an incomplete JS-script. Could it be buggy? And what about the generated medusa? Could it be the culprit?

Your application is crashing on a graphics driver file. I recommend you update to the latest version of drivers for your specific OS / gfx card combination. If you are already on the latest drivers, I would suggest falling back a version or two and retry.

Also, check that Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is set to off. Sometime ago we had crashes related to that and we fixed them, but it could be possible that something slipped.

Commander McLane,
Thanks, I deleted the double oxps.
Unfortunately it did not make any difference.
I have no idea what the "test" means, I saw it at the bottom of the log.

Another_Commander,
I will try your driver suggestion, but I doubt it is a graphics driver problem.
My previous laptop had an Intel MGA-950 graphics card build into the chipset, my new laptop also has a graphics card build-in, but it is much newer in the GM45 chipset.
So 2 laptops with different graphics cards have the same problem, sounds like another problem.

I will test Oolite with DEP disabled, but I hope thats not the problem, disabling DEP poses a security risk.

I have been trying out different solutions:
1) tried disabling DEP - no success.
2) deleted all oxps that were making problems in the logs - no success.
3) set the shader model to simple - no success.
4) set the shader model to off - no success.
5) removed all oxps - SUCCESS.
5.1) removed the half of the oxps - SUCCESS.

So my conclusion at the moment must be that I have an issue where two or more oxps don't like to work together.
It's a lot of work to check this, I count a test run as success when I can play Oolite for at least 1 hour without crashes.

I'll keep testing when I have time.
I have 64 oxps installed, so it will take a while.

OXPs should never cause a crash even if installed multiple times. Any info you can give us to help isolate the cause would be wonderful

Hi Cmdr James,

When removing all oxps solves the crash problem, then the problem must be related toone or more of the oxps, right?
Could it be an oxp not written for Oolite 1.74.2, but for an older version that causes the crashes?
Could it be the amount of oxps I have installed (64), I have noticed that Oolite with these oxps uses around 1.4Gb RAM.

I know that one of the stations in Commies.oxp is crashing the GeForce 7950GT with certain drivers. The crash could also be induced by waiting until the problem station was shown on startup. So, to rule out a graphics driver problem with any of the used models you could wait on startup until all models are shown. (Could take a while with many installed ships)

I am wondering if a phenomenon that I noticed with some staions has something to do with the crashes.
It's hard to explain, but while some staions are rotating, the graphics aren't "clean", it sometimes seems that I can almost look into the station, or a slightly smaller station is rotating in sync at the same position.
Could this be due to 2 oxps that modify station appearance?

Also the Urumtu ship on the market shows some graphics glitches.

Shader model set to high.

Correct, so if we can work out what the OXP is doing, we can stop it, and other OXPs from breaking Oolite.
