Laser hit sound

Post by agorilla »

Hi there, I'm new to Oolite!

I used to play Elite on the Atari ST and the laser made a sound when you hit the target so you knew your targeting was good enough! Is there any way to get the sound effect activated in Oolite?

Cheers

Hi agorilla and welcome.

The sound effect is there, it’s just rather subtle and can be hard to hear. If you install the BGS oxp, you’ll get great screens, and enhanced sound effects. The laser hit effect is much more apparent, which is what you need.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

there already is, but it is a very very subtle difference.. not the screeching sound the Commodore 64 had, and maybe to the Atari ST had.,

You can replace that sound though with an OXP of your own, the file is called laserhits.ogg and resides in the Sound Directory..

as a sidenote: you cannot get an explosion sound as we had on the commodore 64 when you killed a ship, without heavy scripting.

I use the Hawksound OXP, no problem distinguishing if I hit something or not. :)

Clean sounds. Quality female computer voice, new weapon, damage and some station interface sounds.

Thanks for all your prompt replies! I can notice the difference now but it's very subtle!

Cool… yeah, it is very subtle, but once your ears get tuned to it, you’ll be fine.
As suggested above, there are several different soundsets… experiment, see what suits you best.
This game is far better than Elite, but it retains all the magic of the original.

Any questions… just ask.

Enjoy.
