Likeness to Elite: Thargoid attacks?

Post by maik »

My memories of playing Elite on the C=64 are only a haze nowadays, but I seem to remember that Thargoid attacks after (or was it during?) hyperspace jumps were quite frequent, even for new pilots.

In Oolite Thargoids seem to be quite rare and so far I have never encountered more than one battleship at a time. Is my memory playing tricks on me or does Oolite employ a different game mechanic, making it easier?

Cheers,
-Maik

Oolite is different (not sure about strict mode) in that it takes into account the state of repair of the ship. If you keep your ship well maintained you will be less likely to have misjumps than if you allow it to rust away.

I dont know how the exact probabilities compare with elite, but Im sure the calculation is different.

You'll find that Thargoid attacks during hyperspace are quite common if you weave around up and down as you make your jump ... maybe you're flying straight and true more these days, having lost the exuberance of youth ... ;)

Ah yes… I remember it well. On the original, I’d go corkscrewing wildly into the wormhole… and then wonder why I was regularly ‘meeting’ Thargoids.
I’m a more restrained pilot, these days.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Thargoid Attacks

Post by Fleet Commander Phoenix »

I only ever had one thargoid encounter in about 100+ jumps until I figured out how to force a misjump. I did it regularly for a while to rack up the kills, but only because I was Dangerous in a fully kitted-out Trident with a Ext. Fuel Tank. It really helped my kill count (all those little dead thargons after the battle), and, to a much lesser degree, my credit balance ($50/thargon really isn't that much). However, eventually I got tired of being ambushed and killed and stuck and bored and equipment damaged and missiles used and fuel gone, so I eventually decided to stop. I probably will go at it again sometime, though....[/quote]
