Looks like another potential new-style spammer.. yet another not-really relevant post to an existing thread, where a new thread would be more appropriate.
Edit: darn.. a_c beat me by mere seconds!

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Looks like like it's international spam day today. Oh well.

Mentally tagged this one two days ago when it joined but so far it's not on Stop Forum Spam's hitlist. But you're almost certainly right!

Good man!!
I've just tried to 'tell' SFS but you have to 'join' to be able to post spambot details - anybody already a member? If not I will do so.

Lock & fire!
Have a look at its "homepage" ...
Seems only spambots are registering these days?!?

Well it's not quite the "old days" but we had more active admins then - most users never even saw the spambots join before they were tagged and blown away.
It's good to see that there are fresh eyes watching the walls amongst us old'uns.
Like I said earlier my outbox is now full of PMs sent to new members who haven't read them (nor have they posted) with iffy names that just whiff of 'sleepers' waiting to unleash their nasty spam on the forums.

..
Perhaps recruiting a few admins more with the right to delete would make sense?
Or is that out of the question for the "old guard"?
Then such issues would be easier to solve, just my humble 0.2 Cr of course.

I have mentioned the need for a few more admins - but that would require an admin to do something about it and one or more willing volunteers - A_C would be an ideal candidate as he's already a moderator with spam posting nuking capabilities and is active on the forums.
I'm sure some of the "old guard" (myself included) would step up to be counted if none of the moderators could/would do it.
Clearly there is a fine line to be walked between too many admins (anti-nuclear proliferation treaty anybody?) and what we have at the moment which is clearly not enough.

Likewise. I'm already part of the moderating team on another somewhat larger and busier site, and can help out here if needed.

Impressive. Especially the fact that nobody over there has made 0 posts. Seems you got the spambots more under control.Thargoid wrote:Likewise. I'm already part of the moderating team on another somewhat larger and busier site, and can help out here if needed.
Our memberlist doesn't show 0 post users, and if an account is registered but doesn't post within a fixed period (30 days I think), then it's auto-removed.
But yes we have got spambots fairly well covered. We have hacks in place to allow users to notify us of spam (or anything else we may need to look at), plus extensive tools to move/chop-up/sew together threads, and to ban users, domains and IP addresses.
We are also looking at a new hack to require a moderator to approve the first post from a new user before it shows up in public (and from then-on they can post as they wish), but that's not in place yet.
