Well, that's an issue of System_Redux. The clouds of the clouded planet are simply in the texture itself. The Mars-like planet with oceans has no clouds.

Which brings up the question why (all!) the System_Redux planets don't have the usual Oolite-clouds? Answer: because System_Redux doesn't actually use the addPlanet-method, but the addMoons-method, which supresses the cloud-layer. Therefore they can't have clouds, if the textures themselves don't have them.

So that would be a "lack of realism"-complaint to the authors of System_Redux.
Using addPlanet would only effect the extra planets, not the main one. Try removing "percent_cloud" = "0.0" from the planetinfo.plist if you want diamond shaped clouds.

Edit: I did try to add a cloud texture around the main planet with a faster rotation, but it caused the dreaded flickering diamond effect :(

In 1.71 the main planet atmosphere is still there after you use setTexture() on a planet but the cloud cover is alway set to 0.

Depending on your screen brightness, you should be able to see the lit up part of the atmosphere on the side facing the sun. Plus when you enter the atmosphere, the sky starts changing colour to blue.

No matter what, hex clouds and planet.setTexture() simply don't mix.

For the added planets, sure, it's probably better to use addplanet with "percent_cloud" = "0.0", otherwise you don't get any atmosphere effect. Seeing a verdant planet without any atmosphere does indeed look strange! :)

While adding planets using addPlanet is certainly something I would personally consider more realistic, adding chunky cloud blobs to a textured landscape looks even stranger than no atmosphere, and would definitely break any feeling of realism, at least for me!

Cheers,

Kaks.

Better atmospheres, as well as better planets, are on my infamous “to do – later” list.

It has become a sort of habit: Every time CaptKev posts screens, the Berlios screenshots page gets updated.

Snap! I know that feeling! :)

PS I almost forgot the topic! These screenshots are really good. What we're all doing together, with Griff, the Dream Team, and everybody else is really starting to look impressive! :D

@nijineko, I'm just trying to improve a few of the existing textures within System Redux, like adding clouds to planets with oceans etc.

@pagroove, great job with the Lave texture. 8)

@nijineko. The Shots show Busy Ports (a search of the Boards should give you the link), System Redux (on Captain Kevs signature) Anarchys (on the Wiki OXP page), Bouy Repair (on the Wiki OXP page) and Random Hits (on the Wiki OXP page). So apart from Pangrooves take on Lave, they are all available as OXPs.
