Proposal: What about an update to monument.oxp?

Post by Captain Hesperus »

We've lost a great many icons of the modern era in the past few months, not least of which Arthur C. Clarke, Father of the Laws of Robotics.

I would like to propose (and in a sidelong way beg for someone with the skills to do it) an update to the monument.oxp to have monuments with randomly appearing memorial plates for (among others):

Commander Clarke, A. C. (1917-2008) Rating: ELITE

Commander Gygax, E. G. (1938-2008) Rating: ELITE

Commander Jordan, R. (1948-2007) Rating: ELITE

I strongly second this idea, although I do not 'yet' have the skills required to implement it.

Please forgive my ignorance, but who is R. Jordan?
I definitely agree about the other two great men.

Ah! I know who you mean now.
I've not read any of his stuff though.
(Recommended?)

Edit - I think I may have read some of his Conan stuff many years ago.

Can we also add:

Commander Gemmel, D. A. - (1948-2006) Rating: ELITE

please?

I know he's not a scifi author, but still a notable author of heroic fantasy...

Ahum... That would be Isaac Asimov :) Who, btw, deserves his own monument...

As we are talking about it: I seem to remember that monument.oxp never worked on my machine. I have simply removed it ages ago, but never found out what was wrong. Has anybody else had issues with it?

I took the liberty of putting a 'N' in the box on the OXP List. As I still had this on my hard drive the last time I went through the list. And found it didn't work. Might be an idea to put it into the problems section. What do you think?

It works flawless. It is just a stupid oxp that always takes processing time, because it is written in legacy code, and only does something at the lave system. Not advisable to install, but it does what it was written for: add a square box near the Lave planet at the sun side, with the Oolite logo on the box.

But, without any documentation and because it is legacy code you might also move it to the wip section as in my opinion it is still unfinished work without documentation. Or to the problem section because it has to be converted to JS.

I have moved it to the wip section since it does work.

I don't know who was the first to come up with hyperspace, but I first learned about it in Asimov's foundation books.

I think it is also where Braben & Bell got the idea from.

Ray Bradbury needs to be added as well, now.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

How about Alan Turing? Without him, we wouldn't have anything to play Oolite on.
