Pitch and Roll Indicators

Post by TGHC »

I cannot think of any practical use for these, my guess is that B&B put them in the original Elite either to look impressive, or because it seemed like a good idea at the time.

So, why not utilise their positions for some other inflight navigation/combat/scooping data. Giles new Target memory expansion in v1.64 (r323) could be a start.

Of course this idea might be totally impractical, and too much work, but it seems to me that there is an opportunity to utilise what is basically a pretty, but currently useless, space on the dashboard.

If it is feasible, there are all sorts of possibilities:-

Digital velocity (so you can set your favoured fighting/scooping speed)
Mission destination (easy to forget when you have several more jumps to do the next day)
Shield strength %
Targeted opponents laser/missile strength (ECM hardened,QCM) etc etc.

What would you like to see in there?

The P&R indicators may be useful if you use an analog joystick, at least I think, e.g. when docking if you keep the roll diamond 1/3 of the way to the right it'll indicate the correct roll.

You have time to look at the roll indicator while docking?

i usually file my nails while docking with the feet... No, just kidding, it's like having oil pressure gauges on a family car, they're there but you don't look at em all the time

I briefly tried using the mouse instead of arrow keys to steer when I first played.

Almost impossible if it weren't for the pitch and roll indicators, as it maintains the roll until you slide the mouse back across to get back to the middle.

Still can't get the hang of it!

The trick to playing with the mouse is that right-click recentres the virtual joystick. Of course, this requires a right mouse button…

Has anyone flown The Morrigan with it's combined pitch and roll indicator (collectively known as the "Flight dynamics" readout)? I know the whole HUD need a slight redesign to stop it pixelating so badly in (at least my) 17" powerbook displays - but what do people think of it? It simply makes each readout square and overlays the one on top of the other.
And so I gave myself to God. There was a pregnant pause before He said "OK"

What about my current legal status. So that I can tell at a glance whether the police walked in on me while I was, well, you know.
Attacking a Navigational Beacon is illegal. Police are on their way.
