Famous Planets 2.5.OXP and Famous Planets for Povray

Post by pagroove »

After more than a year of hard work I release the latest and probably last incarnation of the Famous Planets series: Famous Planets 2.5.oxp. The amount of work in creating this OXP was a bit to much to be honest. I'm glad it's done. Special Thanks go to Cmdr. Cheyd who managed to make this OXP compatible with future releases of System Redux while maintaining compatibility with current versions of Sys Redux (v.2.5). System Redux is not needed for this OXP to function properly. However it is VERY BIG in size: 630 mb. That's because I decided to release in one package to make installation easier.

I hope you have fun with it. I'm glad it's released.

Youtube promo vid:

Download Link (update the package is now updated by Lestradae). This update is only for new users. It reduces the download size. to 630 mb. Sorry it couldn't be smaller.
Hi P.A. Groove,

I took out the files that did nothing including the thumbs artifacts, and separated the oxp itself and the additional material into two folders. So if you unzip the folder you get two subfolders inside, one the oxp for plug-and-play and one the materials folder and it says so on the tin.

Also altered the inconsistent version number - sometimes it said "V2.0" and sometimes "V2.5", and as it is supposed to be the latter in one go everything now consistently says 2.5.... and the download size is now "only" 630 MB Wink. So, you can re-publish your baby now Very Happy

Cheers

L

2. Famous Planets 2.5. features

- Unique planetary textures for more than 89 planets throughout Galaxy 1 and Galaxy 2
- A nice PDF Planet Guide with a screen shot of each planet
- Nearly all planets have HD textures up to 4096 x 2048 Resolution
- Planet descriptions for the F7 screen. Many descriptions are true to the described planets in Drew Wagar's novellas Status Quo and Multabilis. Others are short extracts from the excellent Rough Guide by Disembodied. Further descriptions where contributed by Drew Wagnar, Pangloss, Cmdr. Cheyd and complimented by Alikat and UK-eliter.
- For ten Famous Planets (Lave, Zaonce, Reorte, Tionisla, Tianve, Teraed, Leesti, Isinor, Diso and Lerelace) the OXP provides a theme tune which plays on arrival from witchspace and on launch from the main station (only Galaxy 1)
- Famous Planets Oolite theme song

Thank you. This was my main Oolite project in the last year. I hope all efforts are not for nothing.
But now I believe we must look into the future. new planet techniques are on the corner. Shaded planets are about to be released. And updating all this planets with shaders will be a long task. However I'm thinking about making a FP for other Galaxies to but with about 10 planets per galaxy. Something called like landmark planets.oxp.

An example of the F7 screen on one of the planets in Galaxy 2.0
Note that the backgrounds are NOT included in this OXP. These are from the Upcoming BGS1.0.oxp by Svengali and me.

another one. I also forgot to say that this planets stay in the memory of the F7 screen even after you leave the system.

A suggestion:

"The Cedizan wolf is now very rare because it has been hunted to near extinction to make the famous local delicacy - the exquisite Cedizan wolf steak."

You can easily adapt the planet texts yourself.:)
Hope you find some inspiration for Snoopers for Galaxy 2.0 and Bloomberg.

Re: [RELEASE] Famous Planets 2.5.OXP

First, let me say that you do great, great work. What I miss in vanilla Oolite are planets that are a bit more special and individual. Your constant efforts makes a big change which galaxy I am :)

Uh, System Redux is in 2.5 now? :O The wiki points me to 1.2.1 and the topic about 2.0 wasn't active since November or so...
Or was that an error?

That's nice :)

BTW: I also await your BGS.oxp a lot. I tried around with backgrounds, but didn't get a set done that doesn't contain content that might get cause license trouble (I guess). And your looks better all the time, anyway :D

Shaded planets are about to be released.
Don’t hold your breath. Even if you’re secretly Guybrush Threepwood. (Also, note that when they do arrive it will be possible to specify normal maps, emission maps and specular maps without writing custom shaders – not that this will make preparing 89 sets much easier.)

Also also note that 1.74 now supports cube-mapped planets. This is now the recommended approach. I’m not going to suggest all existing planet textures should be remapped – lat/long textures will continue to work – but cube maps should be used for any new ones. They’re more efficient (in that they have a more even pixel density) and don’t suffer from u/v distortion.
