Random Hits docking

Post by DGill »

Regarding random hits v1.9.1, is there a way of enabling docking when pressing shift-C - it currently seems to automatically disengage.

That would be because fast-docking (Shift-c) only works at Main Stations.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

..or OXP stations where it has been activated.

You dont't activate the OXP station, the author has to do it in the addon. Ping spara and he might do it.

Add the line

Code: Select all

  allows_fast_docking = yes;
to the relevent entry in the shipdata.plist

Don't see any reason for it to be not included in the oxp. I'll put it in to the next release. Meanwhile Smivs' advice is the way to go. "random_hits_griff_spacebar" at line 1636 of the shipdata.plist is the only ship definition that should require it.

I can only speak for myself, but I have not activated fast docking on any stations in my own OXPs. I personally don't like it (except as a testing tool to speed things up a bit) and think you miss a lot by not docking 'properly' either manually or with standard DC. The station is there to be seen and enjoyed, as is the docking experience.

Too slow, some of us have cargo to drop, pirates to blast...

Seriously, I play Oolite in my lunchbreak. I get one hour. I already spend too much of that burning past trader convoys on injectors and waiting for the hyperspace countdown, I really don't want to spend any of my time watching the docking computer make its desperately slow and careful approach.

Any chance someone could write a docking computer AI that will head straight for the space in front of the docking aperture on full injector burn, scattering NPCs left and right with angry messages, then correct at the last moment and land safely? Now that's a docking experience I would enjoy.

But insta-dock is the slowest form of docking...it takes 20 minutes of game time

I don't use DC at all, but as a core game mechanic I think that the insta-dock should be enabled for all stations. It's up to the player to decide if they want to pay 20 mins in game time.

Probably agree; I don't normally have a problem with manual docking, but with RH and my Griff alternative Krait I get too many failed dockings (possibly the ship is too large for the dock) - happy to make my own mods to the oxp.

Insta-dock can avoid fines if Docking Clearance Protocol is enabled (I'd rather like to see DCP enabled as default, as it happens).
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

I disagree with you on this point - it should be the authors' choice.
Most of my OXP stations are mission-related, and many you only visit once, and I think it would be a waste of my time and effort making a 'nice' station if I thought the player's only interaction with it is to get within its aegis, which is quite a distance away, then insta-dock.
No, I'm sorry, but if it's one of my stations you are approaching, you will have to fly a bit
