Whichspace?

Post by virgopunk »

Hi all,
just a quick question regarding the transition screen seen when using witchspace; how come nobody has ever decided to design something a little more realistic than the current magenta/cyan concentric circles? Is it hard-wired and difficult to change?

It's the only bit that feels a little 8 bit  Would it be difficult to give it a kind of Star Wars hyperspace effect, like stretching stars?

Sorry if this has been discussed previously.
"You'd better be prepared for the jump into hyperspace. It's unpleasantly like being drunk."
"What's so unpleasant about being drunk?"
"You ask a glass of water!"

Likewise the docking tunnel.

"A bit naff" is my review, given the increasing graphical gorgeousness that Oolite is becoming.

Cheers,

Drew.

The first order of the day would be to work out some way to differentiate them, so that entering and exiting a system would be capable of having a different effect than entering and exiting a station.

even the Grim Reaper keeps his distance.

You know that in both conditions, the player does not see what happens (docking or witchspace travel) but the results of being put to sleep by the ships system?

Yes. It would better play a random part from a random movie on the users disk in order to make it look like dreaming ;) I'm quite happy though that I do neither have to sit for the whole time the DC would require to dock nor the many hours of witchspace travel there and watch some realistic view ;)

EDIT: something like the B5 effect for entry/exit could be nice though.

So for the average bloke, just mash together a series of surreal and slightly graphic images.

Some of the hyperspace journies are quite long. What do you do if you need to get up and pee?

Oh yes indeedy.

I don't have a problem with the tunnel itself, but there could be more of an entry and exit effect around the ship before the tunnel appears.

Have you ever tried the game? It's also free...and it's graphics are much better than that what the original series provides on DVD! Sadly, there were a few problems with me and the game, we just do not fit together. Highly impressive graphics, though!

I think the 'dream' sequence makes sense for the witchspace sequence, though aesthetically I'd prefer a 'hyperspace' or similar effect, even if it is speeded up.

The docking I disagree with. If Oolite was real, the length of time between entering the station portal and coming to reside in the dock would be fairly short (minutes tops, if not seconds). This would be a hugely automated mechanism bringing ships in and out very fast to support a ship arriving and departing perhaps twice a minute.

I'd expect to be 'awake' during this, and see the inside of the station (to a limited degree) as my ship was moored.

Apologies in advance for the swear words, but FE2 and FFE managed this very effectively IMHO. Showing your ship being rotated and lowered to a secondary deck when docking.

I think the 'rings' let the side down rather a lot, particularly with the docking sequence.

my £0.02

Cheers,

Drew.

As long as it stays "first person" and doesn't cut to a silly vid sequence, with "third person" view, I don't mind.
But it could be made to look better, I agree.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

A_C, would it be very difficult to allow alternate versions of the hyperjump and docking rings each to be oxp'ed?

(Already dreading the answer)
