BoyRacer test drive

Post by Murgh »

if anyone has spare time between life and gaming, I'd appreciate feedback on a little ship I made.
download [edit: links below] or via the ship group
it's small and vulgar, not too expensive, useless for combat or trading, and can be found at tech level 6.

unzip it, put it in AddOns, buy it, take it for a sunskim or tease some bandits and give me a reaction.

EDIT: File mirrored here:

Mmm. Maxed out with military lasers that's a very nice little interceptor.

Model:
Cool Elite-style - very nice. I'd add about 8m to each vertex's z coordinate to bring the center of mass to the centre of the model though.

Shipyard entry:
Would a ship this small have a fuel scoop as standard?

Shipdata entry:
Needs the exhaust moving for the non-player version. Would this be a trader with a MINING laser? I'd say give hima BEAM laser and let him loose as a hunter or pirate.

Rating:
:D :D :D :D

Yeah, very nice in combat, very fast and manouevrable. Tried out with a military laser, made mincemeat of some pirates. 8)

Miss the targetting system, though. Without any missile lock you can't find out anything about which ships are hostile.

Nice little ship overall, good work Murgh.

P.S. In fact that is a really s***-kicking little mutha you've devised there!
Very funny, Scotty, now beam down my clothes...

:D thanks for the early reaction.
yes, I thought the exhaust would be off, and the mass balance does need a tweak. I was thinking for the prototype that this was a speed-only freak ship, with the odd luxuries of being able to skim fuel and rid its path of asteroids. as it is, enhanced targetting should be available though..

hmm. a nippy ship beam pirate, huh?

Tried it against some cops. The mining laser was surprisingly effective...
Maybe a pulse laser would suit it better, since there is no cargo space.
Looks a lot like Moray.

I made some fix to the H1. here's the NEW direct link to the zip to be swapped for the other.
think I got the biggest flaws like the mass centre and the thruster. wee pList shifts. the paint job is a little more in the spirit of the brand name idea.

yes, Asp, it's related to the Moray, though much smaller and tacky bodacious.
I was thinking of a nippy vehicle for spacejump races through thick beacon-and-asteroids cluster courses (let's build it guys!), and that there should be some downside to flying a turbo barrel. but it's a different type of difficult dogfighting ship. please advise on adjustments.

Eh. I just upgraded to 1.35, dropped the unzipped file H1.01_test.oxp into Oolite/AddOns, and . . . there's nothing there. I've checked at a TL 6 and 7 planet, and it's not for sale.

:?: What am I doing wrong?

I guess there's no guarantee it will be up for sale, even if the oxp works perferctly (edit: which it does). but I thought I made it very probable..
one of these days you'll see it on display! :D

my method is to browse though my legion of saved commanders, and one of them usually is at a station where it is available..

thanks for mirroring, Giles. I realize that linking to a file in a yahoogroup is not ideal because it only works if you've logged in before, or some cookie exists..

Did you restrict the galaxy? 'Cos it worked one jump from Lave with a new pilot, but obviously I didn't have the money!

actually I thought the cobra's trade-in value would get you all the way (unless it was loaded with pricey extras). no, no galaxy restrictions, but it's strange that noone else has had the difficulty you're having. :(

Not quite - about 2,500 short, IIRC.

That's a brand new commander in a brand new Cobra, 1 jump. Perhaps I'll jump around a bit in my current commander and see what I can find.

Well I've been playing a bit & must say that the hatchling boy racer is a tough little mother to destroy! Me & about 10 Galcops were chasing around like headless chickens trying to blast it haha. When I finally zapped
the whippersnapper I was very pleased with myself :D ...

When are you going to release you alternative skin pack Murgh? I loved the look of the rusty ships.

Oolite just keeps getting better, thanks to Giles & all contributors!
