Need a new ship

Post by drew »

For Finis I need a bit of a showdown.

I need some sort of fighter/corvette type vessel that could go head to head with a tweaked Cobra, a Mk5 Vampire and A Caduceii, and potentially emerge victorious...

Any suggestions from the ships already out there, or perhaps some imaginings in that general direction? I don't need an OXP (unless you're feeling really committed), but some specs, descriptions and ideally a rough drawing might be handy...

Cheers,

Drew.

One at a time, or all at once?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

@ Drew,
Tricky one really. If I was using my personal style of sniping then dogfighting, I'd happily take them on in both my Clipper (which is quite large) or my Contractor (which is quite small).
Trouble is if you're talking close-in dogfighting all the way, any ship that could do that would be far too Uber!

@ Ironfist
That's a really nice-looking ship - best boxy/chunky ship I've seen for a long time. My only reservation would be those grey bits that look suspiciously like plasma turrets. Like many folks around here I'm of the school of thought that says such things have no place on small (dockable at stations) ships. If they are, please, please, please lose them.

Smivs,
Glad you like the look, don't really see why most ships should be as streamlined as they are - this is space after all. I have a series of ships with a very similar that I might release if people like them. This one might be a bit too uber for most.
You are right they are plasma turrets, it is intended to be an escort vessel for what I would class as a fleet carrier, a ship that is capable of carrying about 6 ships and just about fittable in a normal docking bay on a station. The blocky shape allows most of the internal volume to be for power generation seeing as the engines are outside.
My thoughts are that the fleet carrier will be the mother ship for a group operating in the same manner as the Resistance Commander OXP. Just my thoughts.

Thargoid's Vortex could probably give the combo a run for their money. Nasty looking thug of a ship too, with plenty of unique features that you may be able to integrate into the storyline.

(Apologies to Drew for derailing your thread!)
Ironfist, this sounds intriguing. Can you actually fit six ships in something small enough to dock? I wouldn't have thought that would work. For example you'd be hard pressed to fit two shuttles (the smallest Oolite ship) into an Anaconda, so even with a blocky shape, maybe four would fit, but the shuttle is far too small to be useful as a fighter/escort I would have thought. Your point about blocky ships is a good one though, and is one I'd considered - when I finally learn how to model I have a very boxy ship in mind for all the reasons you describe.
As for the turrets, well it's a personal opinion/choice thing. I see them as being very energy-hungry things which only make sense on huge unwieldy ships like the naval Frigates.

That ship might be a good choice... I've beat them up in a Vortex, but maybe with a better pilot they could be a dangerous enemy.
How about a modified, Borg-assimilated Thargoid-assimilated style Navy Frigate? It certainly would look cool...
If you want an ironic choice, how about a mega sized Worm with turret lasers and plasma guns?

How about this:

Image

The GA-14G4 "Meerkat" multirole clipper, packing front and rear military lasers as standard from the workshop (with capacity for a turret mounted beast on top) as well as room for 50T cargo and 8 missile bays. It has Navy spec engines and double-strength shield generators.

If you can find a crew of only three to take on board with you, then you'll experience the most manoeuvrable, most customisable ship of its size you'll ever have flown. It packs the firepower and looks of an Imperial Courier tempered with the comfort and convenience of a Fer-de-Lance.

<ahem>

OK, it's not actually from an OXP but it's from a huge list of ships that I have designed but never had time to finish or put into an OXP. It's actually based on the player ship from Galaga, which makes it a nice touch to add to a game like Oolite. It's also the best looking of the models I've designed and I would be singularly honoured to have it featured in the Wagar-Ooliteverse. :-)

Not to get too protective about my baby, but the Spectres are supposed to be pretty effing lethal machines, so in my mind something that could take one on successfully, especially w/ those wingmen you mention (which are no pushovers themselves) would have to be bordering on the unacceptably uber ~ at least in my Ooliverse. Given the MkV's strengths come mainly from the power and cloaking and jamming etc, maybe it would be more "realistic" if your character had some new kinda nullifying weapon that destroys/reduces those kinda attributes?

You're welcome to use the Vortex if you like, or alternatively I've got another ship currently under development that you can tailor to whatever you wish:

(click thumbnail for larger image)

It doesn't have a name or stats yet, so you can tailor it as you wish (if you want to use it). The in-game shot is with a partial texture - it's concept is to have additionally a glow-map on top with celtic/maori style panels on the outriggers plus a decal or two on the top surface in a similar manner.

Spot on - it's inspired by this vessel (or indeed sadly ex-vessel), the anti-whaling ship "Ady Gil".
