Quite by chance, I found this in my old NAS archive today. 'Twas to be the first chapter of a short, but that's unlikely to get written, methinks.

It's an interesting set-up - and it certainly follows the maxim of "shovel the grief onto the hero", including the much more important addendum of having the hero extricate himself using his own skill/brains (combined with sufficient good fortune, of course). Lots of places it could go ...

Not hugely important, really ... it's not really something that comes over terribly well in prose, and it doesn't usually advance the story much. I agree, there isn't one single space battle in Chronicles of Shulth, there will be in the next book. Mainly because there is a hell of a lot of back story to get through as I desperately try and piece it all together in a plausible way.
Just as long as the story keeps on jogging along with some good old cliff hangers and mysteries your all good. Lets be honest here stories that the author thinks are a bit 'iffy' can still entertain an audience. Also some utter tripe can be insanely popular. At the end of the day write because you want to and you get a kick out of telling the story. If this story doesn't do that for you, it's best left in the box.
