Re: Alien Systems OXZ

I was reading the thread because I'm having problems associated with this OXZ. In passing, I saw this, and had a couple of points to throw into the pot, not associated with the actual problem : Great stuff - very funny. A few suggested additions. "insect-messages" "It is not the numbe...

Re: Planetfall 2.0 (apparently)

Try using Enter instead of the Space Bar despite what the screen prompt may say. Would also advise to remove the Docking Fees OXZ and see if that helps with the Space Bar not working. Very Nice messages in the Docking Fees OXZ but it is also costing you extra credits that a Commander who is just st...

Re: Planetfall 2.0 (apparently)

Not programmer or coder myself, but wish to learn one day. Until that day, I am a little clueless when I ask question such as... Can code from the second or third Elite game make a more immersive landing on planets and moons possible? From what I played or both emulations of those games. I do kind ...

Re: Joysticks

What you have to do to eliminate the rough flying is to calibrate the joystick. The potentiometers (an assumption!) in the "throttle" are low-precision components - probably only +/- 20% of quoted range, possibly +/-50% - and the carbon track on most "pots" wears fairly rapidly....

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

BTW, whatever happened to "I'll be back!" and the other really obvious ones? Everyone too busy getting ready for the holidays? "Preparing for the family get-together" and "thinking of doom-laden but not quite explicit comments". Nope, no crossover there at all. A propo...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Off the top of my head, no. Snipers and "defending the walls" not really being a SF trope. There's something lurking in the back of my head, but it doesn't want to come out to play. Yet.

Re: Joysticks

But wouldn't it be more sane to write in terms of chipsets used in controllers, rather then by bells, whistles and hats attached to the controllers. Where would this sort of thing be mentioned? I don't think I've ever seen this information anywhere! Don't "gamer" publications do this sort...

Re: Joysticks

There are now 3 joysticks pages on our wiki (one just for Linux) with some suggestions for key bindings. Any additions/corrections are enthusiastically welcomed. Not having tried to use such a device since I broke a bone in my hand and couldn't use a mouse, I don't really know. But wouldn't it be m...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

If the subject is "threatening but not terribly explicit" pronouncements, then from stories passim (SF, some dude in the US Civil war ; wars of RedCoats against spear-armed natives ad nauseam ; Trafalgar against Nelson ; Richard on the battlements of some French or German castle ; 'Arold o...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Sorry - I should have checked. Is Star Trek on, or off, the table? Still on the table - I did use red shirts as an example but apart from that you're fine. If you want to give me a particularly doom-laden phrase go right ahead. Well, in that case, "The dilithium crystals canna' take it!" ...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Speaking as a claustrophobe with weight issues and a bad back, I would hopefully never be close enough to any of those to be in danger, but I like the terminology. Do they have anything for "this whole cave is actually a giant spaceship-eating monster and we landed the ship in its throat"...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Not quite in the world of science fiction, but in the wonderful world of caving there is a whole genre of names for chambers, boulder chokes, and the like, through which you have to squeeze to try to access the more distant parts of a system. Names along lines like "the Sword of Damocles" ...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Well, that looks like five, and as though ffutures provided the fifth. Again, my sincere apologies for blundering into here and upsetting the smooth running of things. When I receive the Chalice of Destiny (which has it's own account with Oohaul, and will make it's way to the recipient automagicall...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

name a story (in any format) featuring one or more black holes Black holes are doing something, not merely being mentioned as existing, but the story does not involve space-farers trapped in a black hole's gravitational embrace, fighting their apparently inevitable doom. ... Re: Science Fiction Trivia

How many do we have now? Sure you've done the counting up and got to the same non-answer as me, but for the record, I get 2 rejected entries, and 4 which are still with the Returning Officer to count postal votes, stuff ballot boxes, or (since we have an Odyssey in several senses) weave whole cloth...
