Re: Thoughts on long term system stat changes
Is there any natural progression with government type, or is it purely down to the thing that is influencing them? ie One type of influence could push a multigov towards confederacy, while a different type could push it to anarchy. It's the kind of the same with economy: If an agricultural world wa...

Re: Thoughts on long term system stat changes
As for post-Soviet Russia and post-Soviet states, plutocracy really is a better descriptor, but there's no Oolite equivalent for that. The closest might be Dictatorship, but that's not *quite* what's going on in the post-Soviet states. I went with Corporate only because the fundamental goals of the...

Re: Thoughts on long term system stat changes
@ arquebus Good answer! While on the whole I think there could be cases made for generalizable progressions from one gov type to another (for example), history shows us that this generalization is routinely broken in (much more) interesting ways. Agreed. We can argue the nuances of whether Soviet go...

Re: Thoughts on long term system stat changes
I think it's the case that the 256 is a hard-coded limit. So never mind adding extra map space or anything like that, there isn't 'room' allocated for even one more system. This has led to oxps commandeering systems rather than adding them. Which approach causes the most disruption is perhaps a matt...

Re: Thoughts on long term system stat changes
I further suspect that your basic idea correlates well with map size. More systems, less problems with changing them. If each Galactic map were significantly bigger (say x4) then each additional system would be providing a tiny degree of insurance against the map losing its utility. If the player ha...

Re: Thoughts on long term system stat changes
I think this might be a case of a very fine question that doesn't easily lead to a very useful answer. You highlight the simple numerical progression inherited from elite, where a poor industrial is essentially more 'evolved' than a rich agricultural. I think that works as long as they are static. I...

Re: External Docking System
The penguin beak just failed to convince, especially compared to Mr F's glorious nasal girth. Could you have been perhaps swayed by the association with his Uncle Arnie, otherwise known as his flared nostrilness? Also note the distinct vertical orientation og the puffin's beak and how markedly diff...

Re: External Docking System
Pending the lab results, these points provide hope that Tux and I remain penguin: Comedy penguins don't look anything like natural penguins. There aren't many comedy puffins, possibly 'cos most folk would assume them to be penguins. Additionally there ARE penguins with yellow/orange beaks and even ...

...furry penguin puppet. puffin , surely, with that massive orange beakish appendage? https://youtu.be/azEOeTX1LqM?t=10 Mr Flibble hails from a planet with an ancient love of sit-coms... but not that ancient. He might tell you about it, if the king of the potatoe people lets him of course.

Re: Planetfall 2.0 (maybe)
Here's a simple way of adding an equipment reqirement that mitigates potential costs without requiring 'reward' adjustments. Equipment item: heat shielding Landing with: no risk of damage Landing without: 10% chance of damage to a random equipment item So the 'risk' it presents is not really much of...

Re: Planetfall 2.0 (maybe)
To be fair, it's quite logical that atmospheric entry might cause unusual wear and tear and so a heat shield might be a good idea but I'm straying very much into why territory. I understood phkb's avoidance of "why" as being focused on our discussion of "why" would one want to l...

Re: Planetfall 2.0 (maybe)
There might be a bit of enticing involved. I was more thinking along the lines of "as a regular part of normal play", rather than the Oolite equivalent of a K-Mart red light special. Right, that's what I'm wary of. But if an additional cost is involved then that would need to be compensat...

Re: Planetfall 2.0 (maybe)
Here’s a tweak:... By utilising the built in service level, we automatically fit in an existing game system, and the penalties that are associated with it. It's still credits though isn't it? It's just changing when you pay. To be fair, it's quite logical that atmospheric entry might cause unusual ...

Re: Planetfall 2.0 (maybe)
For planetfall it looks like you cannot compensate a missing docking computer with skill. That's the only thing I find odd. There's been a long held 'fashion' in oxp design that new features should cost. Superficially at least, it sounds reasonable but as a balancing factor (the usual reason given)...
