Good news!

Finally, there is new hardware; the old hardware suffered a double failure.

Unfortunately, I have to completely rebuild the server, so it won't be switched over instantly, but the wiki should be back to normal Real Soon Now.

Just an update. STILL working on getting new hardware, so the wiki is still on a home ADSL connection with an ancient UltraSPARC system. Sorry. PLEASE PLEASE don't try and download the whole wiki with some kind of "recursively get the whole website thing" (such as wget, or anything else). ...

If it runs, nothing.

The oolite autopackages come with a cut-down gnustep install which is as pared to the bone as possible and still runs. There are official Ubuntu packages but these follow the stable release.

What kind of system do you need
One in the data centre, really, rather than in my house! The arrangements at the moment should only be temporary, I'm hoping it won't be long before proper replacement hardware is available at the data centre (spares are on order).

VAX = ? (Youngling unknowing of stone age technologies... :P ) Once upon a time, there was a company called Digital. They invented a machine called the PDP-8, on which in the year 1969, the very first baby steps of UNIX were taken. Later, it produced the PDP-11, which was a legend in its own luncht...

No, not without clobbering both my poor old SPARC system and my ADSL upstream at the same time!

It could have been worse - it could have ended up on my VAX!

Oolite is noteable. The wikipedia entry was nominated for deletion but, after noteability was established (mainly due to the fact that it received an "Editor's Choice" award from Macworld ) the decision was made to keep the article. It's now currently listed in the freeware category. It w...

To be pedantic, it's not "freeware" (which usually refers to proprietary, closed, but gratis software - i.e. software that is not libre, only gratis). Oolite is both libre and gratis, i.e. free in the sense of freedom as well as free as in there's no charge for it. Oolite is better than fr...

OK - I have dug up some spare hardware and set up the wiki on it while the proper server is having trouble. I loaded the backup from the weekend onto it. There are some caveats: - The only suitable hardware I could dig up is an old 333MHz UtraSPARC II system (openbsd/sparc64). Therefore it's not ver...

The wiki - problems

Unfortunately, hardware problems continue with the server that runs the wiki, and it's getting worse. I will try and arrange for some alternate hardware on which to run it, but for the time being this probably means it will be on my ADSL line which has only 256Kbits of upstream. Until I get it runni...

It's down again. It's been going up and down like a $100 whore recently.

I think it may be suffering from the capacitor plague in its power supply, a new one is being ordered.

GAH.

It appears to have hung again. Again, I'll have to talk to the data centre tomorrow.

You can replicate MediaWiki on more than one server, Wikipedia does it after all. Probably the easiest thing is a read-only copy elsewhere and a fairly short DNS TTL on the "wiki.alioth.net" record so the switch takes effect fairly quickly. In any case, it's up now . Don't know what's up w...
