This becomes important as soon as you have more than 1000 kg of precious metals on your ship, because your safe has only a capacity of 1000 kg. Anything above that quantity is stored in a cargo canister... I thought it was any amount above 500kg (or even above 499kg)? Ah, you're right, my bad. Also...

When I started playing Oolite, I had the same issue of wishing back the grey dots from previous incarnations of Elite. However, after a short while of playing, I had adjusted. And now I find in retrospect that the grey dots were actually a cheat, and I like the hard-to-discern-in-the-distance ships ...

Just to make sure I've got this straight... If I scoop gold (or gemstones or anything that would normally go in a safe) it shows in the manifest as if it's in the safe, although it's actually in a cargo canister that I can select for ejection. Not quite yet, because there is another quirk as well. ...

The basic problem is that the game apparently uses key scancodes instead of ASCII values. As far as I know, the game does use ASCII values. Are you sure that they don't appear at all, or do you just mean that you didn't find them? You can check for the former by making an entity dump into your latest.log (pause game, then press '0' (zero)), and check for the presence of the target, even if you're on a deployment version of Oolite.
