Re: [Solved] Sound Absent
Well, I ran those commands through.......and my whole desktop went haywire. I ran an update, and restarted the machine, but when it came back, it wasn't right. I tried coming back to here through Google Chrome, and it restored me to where I abruptly cut off. As soon as I started this reply, the desk...

Re: Sound Absent
<Getafix (dizzy from headbanging) is performing Diziet's favorite tap dance!> :) By the way, I will mark the thread as solved. @mandoman Now that we made your PC a lab-rat  , would you try to go with the nVidia proprietary drivers? (this sounds like truth or dare?) I mean, you could have b...

Re: Sound Absent
Yeah, I've already found some good leads. From the looks of it, the 8800 GTX was kind of overkill for this motherboard any way.

Re: Sound Absent
That's good you got it working :). Sounds like your 'friend' needs to replace that bad video card ;). Yeah......it might be easier (and less stormy) to just get a new one myself. I've been researching, and there are actually cards that are a better match for this MB. It's just a matter of $$$$$$$$$...

Re: Sound Absent
Including if the card is installed, and the monitor is plugged into the card? (I just need to be absolutely clear, here) Yes, in fact the machine won't even begin to boot if the card is installed, but the monitor isn't plugged into the digital card port. The monitor has two cable ports, one for dig...

Re: Sound Absent
The only other thing I'd suggest you check is that DVMT Mode Select is enabled ( not set to FIXED, in other words), and that DVMT/FIXED Memory is set to 256MB, and not 128MB. After all, you may as well get the best possible performance you can out of the on-board graphics. Do you have a copy of the...

Re: Sound Absent
From F2>Game Options whilst docked.. or Pause, then F2>Game Options, in flight. Then what. I can get that far, but when I scroll down to the Shaders adjustment, nothing I do seems to open/change/anything on the setting. I'm sorry if I'm being dense. I've tried looking all around, but I can't find t...

Re: Sound Absent
About ready to throw my hands and give it up. I tried the GeForce card again, and it's fried. I guess I'm ignorant about what you mean when you say "unless mandoman is running trunk", I downloaded the game from the Oolite site, AFTER purging all versions of it from my machine, both from ca...

Re: Sound Absent
Maybe I should try the GeForce card one more time, now that I have the drivers for it downloaded.

Re: Sound Absent
Are you running in strict mode? If you resize the window (F12 for windowed mode) do you see performance improvement? Can you try running in full-screen non-strict mode and reduce the graphics details from Oolite options menu? Does any of these changes reduce the "jerkiness"? :? No, it's n...

Re: Sound Absent
I think Diziet Sma has it nailed. I've thought as much myself, I just don't know how to prove it. A lot of suggestions here for me to try, and I'll get right on them. Thanks all, and I'll be back with the results.

Re: Sound Absent
Basically, package installations on Linux, whether via apt, Synaptic, Software Centre or even RPM, can scatter numerous files in various places across the system, unlike, for example, Macs, where all the files for a package are generally kept in one place. I've seen Mac users describe the Linux met...

Re: Sound Absent
I use Mint 13 with MATE desktop, so it might be slightly different from your setup. Go to System -> Preferences -> Additional Drivers. That will take you to a window that should bring up your Nvidia card. Install the driver, and reboot. If you're still having problems, then I'd use the driver from ...

Re: Sound Absent
Does that come with the NVidea X Server, by any chance? I got that out of Package Installer just to check it out, but haven't done anything with it yet. lspci -vnn | grep VGA -A 12 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:29c2...
