Considering that option, we then might wish to remove the requirement for docking computers for example Wouldn't this be a good risk factor to help balance any rewards the player might reap? In my experience the traffic on such routes is not as congested as the main lane so I think the risk may not...

I've no problems with detracting from the main station - as long as it makes sense to me. Since they control the markets on the station, I would guess that they control the profit on goods imported or exported to the station surface.
