Re: Are OXZ's an improvement ...

I think the principle of being able to download expansions easily via the in-game manager should be maintained. What we need therefore is a mechanism whereby this simplicity is maintained while allowing for the same ease of access to the workings of the expansions that we currently have with OXPs. ...

Re: Are OXZ's an improvement ...

I will over-state it again, but for the last time, since I believe this horse is already dead. I think OXZ as a format is a dead-end. It gets in the way of one of Oolite's basic principles , that the game data is in a form that is easily editable with basic tools by everyone. It is therefore, not as...

Re: Are OXZ's an improvement ...

It was exactly with this point in mind that I was earlier suggesting that OXZs should be viewed as the nice easy and reliable 'managed expansions' for everybody, including those that have no inclination to tinker, and that OXPs should become the format of choice for expansions which might need some...

Re: Are OXZ's an improvement ...

I hesitate to post this, but I've been reminded recently of the value of candour, and I therefore ought to. I have come to the conclusion I do not like the concept of OXZs. Oolite's chief advantage has been that it is easy to mod and edit, ideally with the simplest of text editors and graphics edito...

Re: Are OXZ's an improvement ...

Can I urge again, to the current devs, aside from any extra beta-testing of OXZs and any limits or purges of what's available, what is required most is a module inside Oolite that checks an OXP hierarchy or OXZ zip file for internal consistency. Such a module would need to: 0. check the OXPZ request...

Re: Are OXZ's an improvement ...

I'm sure this has been thought of/dealt with, but... OXZ's need to undergo a substantial amount of sanity checking before they should be made available. Particularly with regard to dependencies, which should be subject to an exhaustive check to be certain that the files required are indeed where the...

Re: Proposal for 1.82: equipment balancing and choices

FWIW my handwavium for the torus drive's mass locking was that within a certain range the technology involved in torus drives (which is also found in some space stations) interacts with any other similar technology in an unpredictable and dangerous way, possibly involving a cumulative acceleration e...

Re: Older versions of Oolite

Just to splash my oar about in here, I'd like to see an archive of older (non-maintained) stable and release versions of Oolite accessible on the oolite.org website. With all necessary warnings, caveats and quibbles of course.

Possible Server Outages Tomorrow 30 July 2014

The ISP that hosts this site is conducting a few upgrades as they merge with a second ISP.

There may be a few BB outages on Wednesday 30 July 2014 as a result.

Everything should be back in order by Thursday 31 July (If it's not I'll start raising hell support requests.)

Re: Proposal for 1.82: equipment balancing and choices

I assume equipment with a resting energy drain will need to have a minimum energy level property (1 bank) at which they'll shut off rather than cripple the ship.

Re: No more metal fragments?

Just as an aside. With the damage to NPCs bearing closer and closer resemblance to the player ships' experience, maybe it would be nice to see a heavily battered NPC ship pop the occasional hull plate off while it's "throwing sparks."

Yeah, a zip file with those pics in a folder would be great.
