Re: Oolite 2: ship balance, starting conditions and death kn

Recently I played "vanilla" Oolite for a few days. Partially it was due to procrastination over rebuilding my folder of OXPs, but partially it was to make sure I remember what it's like starting out. I would disagree with the idea of starting the average newbie off worse than we already do...

Re: Maneuverability Preferences

I stand corrected on the point of my typo. I meant MKIII. As had been said hundreds of times dimensions and OOphysics comparison's to RL(tm) are utterly pointless - the Cobra Mk III can behave however it wants as long as it feels right inside the game and in comparison to everything else. Tha...

Re: Maneuverability Preferences

Well, not sure what the standards are, but since we usually base most things on the default Cobra MKII, I guess that'd be medium? And since I usually leave the precision joystick mode on, it would be the slow side of medium. If it turns any faster than that, it just doesn't feel like the ship is act...

Re: List of other multi-platform games - free or open source

I would note that "Wing Commander: Privateer Gemini Gold" is a development off the "Vega Strike" engine. But it is significantly different in gameplay and storylines and touches like cut-scenes that I would agree it should have the separate entry. Both are very good, though I pre...

Re: Lifestyles of the rich and elite

Switeck: Well, the large docking bays could also be places the player isn't allowed to dock anyway. They'd justify the occasional presence of something like a luxury space liner that appeared to be arriving or leaving. Somebody might have a nice yacht, but they can't necessarily expect to dock at th...

Re: Lifestyles of the rich and elite

I suppose it wouldn't *have* to be actual game time passing. Time passing on the station at least seems to occur in other OXPs. In Random Hits, the player pays for their sandwich and drink and is told what sort of entertainment there was, so they can assume at least a bit of time passed while they w...

Lifestyles of the rich and elite

Posh luxury resort hotel stations in the very wealthy systems could add some interesting possibilities. One would need a cr balance of 2-3 million or Elite status (since Elite status is about the only sort of celebrity we actually have in the game at this time) to even dock. Anyone not up to those s...

Re: SOS (Ships On Sale) oxp suggestion and ship lottery idea

Well if it was a lottery or sweepstakes that the player actually had to buy chances in and had odds of winning that were even close to the average "car giveaway" sort of contest, it wouldn't "make it too easy", really. The chances of actually winning would be low enough that a pl...

Re: new device, pirates tool perhaps

...(I was kind of hoping the Devs would give in and make it part of the game engine for random but repeatable stations) This was my hope as well, actually. It would be good to have it working again with current versions. I can understand it not being a super high prio since in the "vani...

Re: Can't explain Oolite to the wife

I've never made anyone in my family read any Oo-fic. Not even my own efforts. Nor, to date, have any of them been so inclined so far as I know.

Re: new device, pirates tool perhaps

I think that more possible career directions to explore in Oolite can be good, at least to a point. Both the Dredger and the Salvage Gangs were among some of the first OXPs. I don't make a lot of actual use of either, but some of my credits came from trying the Dredger and some of the gear on my shi...

Re: Clearing Up a Debate Once and For All

Also, restrict yourself to certain rules from time to time: - spend one gaming session just bounty hunting in an anarchy; - spend one gaming session mining; - spend one gaming session by killing an innocent in sight of the space station, and see how long it takes to get 'clean' again; - replace you...

Re: Interplanetary "Finances"

Black Monks are fair game as far as I'm concerned, but only from a safe distance :-) I just don't like their business model and I like to think I'm doing my bit by throwing a small spanner in their works. (...I wonder if their stations are destructible? I've got a Q-bomb that's just begging...) Wel...

Re: Split: Player Ship Lasers

I would agree that the "vanilla" game that new players start with *must* be well balanced. It also has to look good while running on a wide assortment of machines. It is the first impression, and likely it *is* Oolite to most people. The dev team here does a great job on that. The people t...

Well yeah. But that's why you have a ship's safe for gems and precious metals.
