Ad-Astra - big galaxy, Elite flight model

Hi, I've just stumbled upon a game called Ad-Astra while poking around with a personal project. It is meant to be a Frontier-like galaxy but with an Elite style flight model. Great idea, but it is a bit rough to play. Still, the guy put a lot of work into it so deserves some credit! Regards, David.

Thanks for comment. Actually my plan is not to create a good game, but rather to get myself used to jMonkey/Java3D. That is not a good start... if you don't care about creating a good game, you won't put enough effort into it. Just porting Oolite to a different platform using the same language was ...

Some work was done on this

See this thread for my experience when working on this.

I recall finding a suitable font and having to rework the UI text routines being the biggest problems.

David.

I’ve also played around a little with the GNUstep developer tools, which are like a horrible, horrible parody of the OS X ones. But don’t tell the GNUstep people I said that. ;-) Now if only I could work out how to start them without setting off a fork bomb… Finally someone knows what I'm talking a...

In most cases the planet textures are generated on-the-fly so there are no texture images in the game's directory tree for them. From what you say it sounds as if you were using my libnoise mod which gave Earth-like and Mars-like textures generated based on various info about the planet. This was di...

Planetary rings, as done by the Infinity guy

I'm not sure why you can see so much of the rings at once - its like you're a god or something, but extremely cool nonetheless:

Ahruman, when can we have this? ;)

I still come by every week or so to see what's happening.

I've changed the description of Oolite-PC project to point to the Oolite-linux one, changed the home page to the Oolite-linux one, and removed most of the things like bug-tracker, feature-request, etc.

Regards,
David.

Actually, I was thinking Distributed Objects, assuming this works with GNUstep Foundation. There is a reason I didn't mention them. And it isn't because I don't know what they're for. I think when we're talking cross-platform code and one of those platforms is GNUstep, plain old TCP/IP with a simpl...

Very cool. The separate app for the console communicating via TCP/IP or something sounds like the way to go. At least then it is available to be ported on Win32 and Linux, rather than there being no option at all. Simple TCP/IP code might just compile and run under GNUstep[*]. The GUI would be a dif...

To do it properly you then need to update the AI flight routines to use them too. The combat ones are the most important or the player will be at an advantage.

Anyone putting their hand up to describe how the AI should change it's combat tactics to take account of yaw thrusters?

For the love of all things holy man, get yourself out of that horrific PLIST scripting and into something that makes sense! It just kills me that OXP authors are putting stuff together with copy/paste from other OXP PLISTs and battling with that insane syntax. I mean of course that's the only reason...

Lateral thrusters are very definitely not happening, because they would require us to abandon all semblance of the original Elite flight model. Which is exactly what I did in one of my unpublished experiments - I replaced the player's ship flight model with a newtonian one using the ODE physics lib...

The most recent laptop work gave me can do the shader stuff - I was compiling from the source tree every now and again while you were building up to 1.69, but usually it didn't work and I couldn't be bothered to fix it ;) I have seen freaky thargoid working and your Cobra demo, but don't have the en...

Finally bought a new PC!

I've been putting it off for years, but have finally bought a new PC. I ordered an Intel E6600 CPU, 2GB RAM (will get more later), and an NVidia 8800GTS with 640MB of video ram. That, plus all the other bits, including a wonderfully quiet Antec case arrived today. I hurridly bolted it all together i...
