Re: Chart issues with Retina displays
Hmmm. Brand new iMac retina 27" 3.5ghz won't display the galactic chart. I DLed the binary from Getafix, but now have this problem (note galactic chart still doesn't work). I have not tried any other fixes yet. Just reporting this. The whole game is in the bottom left corner (this stays the sam...

Re: Split: Sound Effects
The system hit of multiple sounds can go two ways: 1. If it uses active DSP effects, there will be a processor cost, but the game file will remain the same size 2. If it uses a pre-recorded bank of new sounds, there should be zero-to-minuscule processor cost, but the game file size will grow (if eac...

Re: Split: Sound Effects
OK, if the random sound gets implemented, my first project would be to take the vanilla soundset and create minor variations on each sound. The changes only have to be very subtle. I'd take the standard laser sound, for example, and add high pass to a couple of takes, low pass to a couple. maybe a n...

Re: Split: Sound Effects
I posted a question about random sounds to Cim in PM. As it turns out, I think it's probably appropriate to put it in the thread itself. Here are my and Cim's comments: I'm an audio guy, but not a programming guy. I'm really interested in the idea of lots of random variations on sounds (like damage ...

Re: Split: Sound Effects
One request for new sounds. Every time an action occurs, it triggers the relevant sound (e.g. a beam laser "zap"). Is it possible to script it so that, instead of playing one set sound, it plays one of a selection of sounds, possibly at random? This way, you can record a bunch of "zap...

Re: 3D Modeling Software
My head is already spinning. I did pick Blender up once a long time ago, but didn't have the time to really get into it.Commander_X wrote:+1 for Blender.
A heads up, though, get ready to tweak the Dat2Obj*.py scripts -- they are mainly outdated.

3D Modeling Software
I want to design a model of a Coriolis space station including its interior, and possibly a few ships. I'm doing this as a reference for a book I am writing that is set in a very similar universe to the ooniverse . I find it very useful to have images and diagrams of my scene settings when writing a...
Re: Salvage
Thanks a lot ClymAngus, I get a lift from positive feedback. Do let me know if anything didn't work for you. The one worry I have is that I am very familiar with the world, and I am trying to tread the fine line of giving enough description so the reader knows how everything works, yet not so much a...

Re: Tales from the spacelanes...
It's pitch black, and cold. I know I'm hurtling through space, but everything is still and weightless in here. I don't know how long the air will last, or how long it needs to last. Maybe forever. I shift the freezing knife to my other hand, try to breathe as slowly as I can, and wait. -- I'd been s...
Salvage
Hey. Some of you might remember I wrote a first chapter of an Oolite-inspired novel about a year ago. Well, I have continued the project and now have over half a book drafted (8 chapters so far). The story is basically the same, but I have radically altered the first chapter. I am attaching the firs...

Re: BGS HD Backgrounds
Thanks. At least I know I can stop trying now. Two followup questions. 1. So, is there a particular size of image that will maximize the resolution to current capacities? Or will any image greater than 1024x512 be identical? 2. What about the image with the rotation planet? That's always in HD for m...

BGS HD Backgrounds
I play Oolite on a 1440x900 monitor. The backgrounds in BGS are 1024x512 so they end up stretched. I put in some 1440x900 ones, but it seems as though they need to be in 2:1 aspect as they didn't show up at all. So I made a 1800x900 one. That showed up, but still pixellated. So I did a 2048x1024 ful...

Facing the usual dillemma: fake gravity on ships or not? And if so, how/whether to bother explaining it? Here's a quick bit of writing I figured out. Smith flew through the cloud of fire and hull fragments of his latest victim. He thrust his pelvis rhythmically while biting his lower-lip in his usua...

Re: Lost in Transit (Novel under construction)
A great start, staggerlee! One petty nitpick: It’s carrying half a ton of gear that’s meant to be on Arxeza this time tomorrow I assume "half a ton" is meant figuratively, here, for "a large amount", but given the capacity of a Boa, and given that a dockworker would be very fami...
