Re: Oolite essay: game lore, features and mechanics

Yeah the player centrism in too much rating-based adjustment would probably wreck it for me. My theoretical workaround is that there are certain things you just flee as you start, and you jump into more and more situations and contracts as you get to iron ass, that you never would have as a naked p...

Re: Oolite essay: game lore, features and mechanics

I haven't started anything yet, right now it's data gathering and collecting my thoughts and processing ideas. I've barely even looked at the shipdata code

Accuracy sounds like something I'm guaranteed to tinker when I get to it all.

Re: Oolite essay: game lore, features and mechanics

Actually yes. I've got it, had a fair few bashes with it but I was testing too many mods at once so I wasn't paying attention... thus I didn't notice differences even though I'm sure they were there and poignant. In the end, since I am excessively thorough, I removed everything except the resize val...

Re: Oolite essay: game lore, features and mechanics

Now we're getting somewhere. Is 'encounter hopping' a sacred cow of elite/oolite? Is masslocking the way to achieve this? How long can a non-combat encounter last before it's like watching grass grow? If masslock facilitates the encounters then must it also be the factor that maintains them? Yes, ye...

Re: Do any of you play by an "honor code"?

I just want to "thank" Cody for the following comments: ..because of which I was so miffed by my sense of (in-game) self-importance and elite indestructibility, that I went and took an unnecessary risk about a week ago and tried to shoot down a missile when I had plenty of fuel for injecto...

Re: Oolite essay: game lore, features and mechanics

Happy Sunday, inferior donut enjoyers (plot twist: I don't even eat donuts at all ever due to my general patrician superiority). I feel like the best takeaways from Redspear's original point which led to the Torus Drive exchange (which is far from over and on which I have some really good points to ...

Re: [RELEASE] A small collection of new and refreshed stuff

Could you, by any chance, remember what missile was fired ? This problem existed in the past but I was not able to narrow it down. I didn't target the missile so I had no name to it. However, unless Black Monks introduces weapons for its gunship, I would say I am very confident it was a standard ha...

Re: [RELEASE] A small collection of new and refreshed stuff

Some weirdness going on with the missile. If you have Broadcast Comms installed, the missile will thank you for the assist when it reaches it's target and detonates. There's nothing there has has anything to do with comms, it shouldn't talk. A weird little thing I can't fix. Must be a glitch in Bro...

Re: Do any of you play by an "honor code"?

Accepting the first plea of mercy is interesting. Not that I'm merciful on anyone that's shown a demonstrably unjustified willingness to endanger myself or others in a bad way. I'm pleased to hear this, and I really have to keep that in mind as I continue to pick edits and additions at cim's CommsPa...

Re: Oolite essay: game lore, features and mechanics

Look it's probably my bad for publicly going full doubtful heretic on the main sacred cow of Oolite (Torus Drive) and I was going to let it go, but then you said... some things you hadn't considered but regarded as "compelling". Job done . No, not as long as the arguments that Torus=time l...

Re: Oolite essay: game lore, features and mechanics

OK, so firstly the obvious part: torus isn't teleport. Key differnce is that one would remove risk (of travel) the other only saves time in the absence of risk Risk wasn't what I'm talking about. I'm talking about two very different intergalactic states-of-being: 1. The one where everyone can zoom ...

Re: Oolite essay: game lore, features and mechanics

Exceptions should only exist in order to improve a rule's implementation I think excellent, a fellow purist 8) So it's clearly faster but is it easier? If so how so? Well, the evasion maneuver stated earlier -- and this is very significant. Which I never use. I could not even begin to tell you how ...

Re: Oolite essay: game lore, features and mechanics

this was all entirely reasonable and extremely compelling! I'm not resisting the idea of Torus validity for the sake of resisting. I've just never considered it valid because NPCs never use it, because it is so fast it's basically a slow teleport, and because the various logical reasons in my head ...

Re: Do any of you play by an "honor code"?

Just some more little things, because I feel like most of what this board discusses is almost all technical and philosophical and we don't talk enough about the fun and game we're actually having :P 1. I fly with weapons offline unless I am picking a fight or a fight has been picked. Justification: ...
