Oolite and the Joy of Joysticks

This Christmas saw a new Logitech Attack 3 joystick under the tree for Yours Truly. Thanks to the sage advice of fellow captains here, I downloaded USB Overdrive X and soon had the stick's buttons all programmed and working perfectly. With this fearsome new tool I set out, ready to make the jump fro...

To answer the original question, about all that you can do to improve the eMac's performance is boost the RAM. My son is running a 4 year old eMac,
(G-4, 700 MHz) and Oolite's performance is a bit jerky.

I agree; it's just one more anomaly one might run into when working your way around the galaxy. Considering that after his initial attack pass he sent the rest of the time running, the Invincible Asp is a bug that I can live with.

Thanks for the word on that. I do have to admit that I'm relieved he didn't seem to hold a grudge for my determined pursuit...

Iron Asp?

On the way in to one of my favorite little anarchies, I was jumped by 3 pirates. I dispatched the first two pretty quickly. The third, an Asp MkII, was un-killable. I poured concentrated fire into him, and 3 out of my 4 ECM hardened missles were direct hits. Didn't faze him. After 30 minutes of over...

Mac Friendly Joysticks

It's that time of year, when my family are all flummoxed as to what I might like for Christmas. As I lpondered this over my keyboard, the worn arrow, A, W,and S keys all seemed to cry out in unison for a joystick to share the abuse heaped upon them by my seasonal "Oolite" play. I use a Mac...

Invisible Constrictor

I've just started playing again from the beginning, v1.65. Last night, after a kill above Orerve, I received Capt. Carruthers' "Right On, Commander!" message. Once the battle was done and my cargo hold was full, I scooped the sun and jumped to my destination, Riedquat. Upon docking, I rece...

I'm just getting back into Oolite after several months' hiatus (the sailing season is winding down.) I'm American, found the game in 1985 when I bought my used C-64. Loved it then, and always hoped to find it again in the Mac World. Last November, I stumbled across Oolite as a free download from the...

1.64 Niggling Little Things

Now that work seems to be slowing down and I can devote myself to more important things, I've been enjoying v1.64 on a grand scale. I just completed the "Thargoid War" run in Galaxy 3, and will now spend a fair amount of time working my way through the rest of 3 before I move on. 1.64 does...

Personally, I like the money. My preference is to scoop the escape pod, then come about and destroy the unmanned ship to scoop as much of his cargo as I can hold.

Great info from all of you here. I'll spend time tonight reviewing these.

Although I have become much more proficient at flying from the keyboard,
I know that the right joystick would only help a this point.

My highest ranking commander is my current one in Oolite, rated "Dangerous" and just about to break the 1400 mark. I'm close to the end of a thorough sweep of Galaxy 2, got a galactic hyperdrive and about 300,000 in the bank, ready "to boldly go" into Galaxy 3.

How old is your son? He really likes it? 8)

My son, Joshua, is 12. He does indeed like Oolite, and has chosen a life of crime. I consider this his personal form of rebellion against the Old Man, whose legal status is still "Clean."
