Re: "Star Wars Downunder"

Belgium is very hard to beat for Beer diversity. I got a very unhealthy 'thing' for Wheat beers when I lived there, and there's nothing (Larger wise) to compare to a draft Stella.

Re: Thoughts on technology

All of my Epson scanners for the last 10 years or so have had a negative/slide holder and the results are very good indeed. I also noted from CPC: Q: Why can I only deliver to a UK address? A: Due to additional exporting charges and safety or security measures, we must be contacted first (Email: int...

Re: What would a 'real' spaceship actually look like?

Back to the idea of using a concrete like substance, spheres are simply 'bubbles' which you then second fit (add oxygen and the internals etc), and what I was originally thinking of. The ship used in the opening sequence to Avatar had the feel of a 'real' ship. I can't remember the film but one ship...

Re: What would a 'real' spaceship actually look like?

Terraforming Mars should have begun decades ago and ought to be well underway by now
Much tho' I'd love to see that happen the 'Red sand huggers' would stop any attempts long before it left Earth.
Well, it might be best to wait until we are sure there is no life there.
Oh no it's already started.

Re: What would a 'real' spaceship actually look like?

I'm with Day on the 'everything form space' question. Getting resources from the asteroid belt might itself be a limiting factor in producing ships in orbit. Getting a 'plant' to the belt might prove the same. I've always imagined space craft and stations to be built of concrete (ever since seeing t...

There are some incredibly ugly cars around at the moment, but people are still buying them.
And just to enhance the aesthetics they buy them in white. :0=.

Re: Perhaps of interest: 'Basics of the Unix Philosophy'

The original intention of the 'bare arms' amendment was to allow local militia to be raised when necessary for individual states, not for personal weapons. For a good (independent) grounding on the US and it's formation have a read of Bill Bryson 'Made in America'. Normally a 'travel writer' (most o...

Methinks it's time to scrap the 'aerial' part of the license and make it that if you are watching or listening to any BBC output, you pay. Easily done for the iPlayer (again infinitely superior to the much better funded 'commercial' offerings)

Re: How to foster snooty exclusivity on a forum?

I guess pivotal to the rise of capitalism are the mechanisms that allow it, for instance I run a limited company and I'm fully aware of what the 'limited' part of that means. I'm the only shareholder (now possible, but previously there needed to be 2). 'Money' (or more correctly 'token passing' or '...

Re: How to foster snooty exclusivity on a forum?

the most significant marker event of the period would probably be the invention of the steam locomotive in 1804. The light the blue touch paper moment was surely the creation of the Canal network. In short the first rule of commerce is that you have to create demand. Most social change comes from t...
