Re: modernized targetting system

I am not a programmer in RL, but in my opinion, and without meaning disrespect to anyone, I believe that if you look closely, you will find that things have gone the other way. The code has actually evolved, is now much more structured and has cleaner object implementations than before (and all arc...

Re: Targeting info on HUD

Plenty of interesting ideas in your post, SgtSchultz, but you may be pleased to know that at least the above quoted gadget exists already in 1.72.2. Check out the reticle_target_sensitive key in your 1.72.2's hud.plist and set it to <true/> to activate it. Alternatively, you can install the Target ...

Re: modernized targetting system

I just wish I had a possibility to link the hat-switch to the views, even though the hat has more directions than there are views from within the ship, it would dramatically help to switch between front and aft lasers, and mining for those who have side mounted mining lasers... Concerning the targe...

Re: modernized targetting system

The oolite targetting system is really primitive. Simple "friend or foe" displays were sufficient for classic Elite, but become very frustrating in larger battles and missions where specific ships must be located and monitored. Managing large group of mixed friends and enemies is very con...

Targeting info on HUD

Here's something I'd like to see as an (optional) HUD element: First, some background to set the context: If one has the appropriate upgrade, when one targets a ship (with a missile or via ID comp) the ship is surrounded by a targeting box and the ship type, legal status, and distance from player sh...

Casino rOyale

Another way to make a few quick creds is to pay a visit to your local friendly hOopy casino (assuming you're using the hOopyCasino OXP ). Don't be tempted by the hOops - the house, of course, has the advantage. But if you steer clear of the casino and head instead for the trade factor, you'll find t...

you mean the one with the irritating wheel code unlock device? i loved that game! still trying to find an intact copy of it. ^^ I really wish I could help you out on this one... but unfortunately I was the victim of a fire a few years ago that took out a chunk of my lab/workroom. I lost a lot of ir...

Max tech level?

What is the maximum tech level planet/system that I can expect to see while cruising about? So far (in Galaxy 1) the highest TL I've encountered is 14, and such systems are few and far between. Intuition (and a suspicion that TL's are encoded in 4 bits) would suggest that 15 is the max, but I've yet...

Being a mostly PC man, I have to stick Freelancer in there as a modern tribute to Elite... Hmm. Back when Freelancer came out the reviews it got were rather mixed; I guess that's part of why I never tried playing it. Was I wrong? Is it worth a second look? Also - just for the general atmosphere and...

These are a few of my favorite games

Here's some of my favorite games out of the past and present - with emphasis on those that involve some sort of space combat and/or trading: - Classic "Star Trek" The Granddaddy of all space combat computer games. - Original Elite (on C64 & C128) What can I say? The meter-stick by whic...

Another oft-mentioned "trick" for racking up trade runs quickly is to avoid the primary transit corridor for ships in-system. Almost all insystem traffic flows between the witchpoint beacon (where you emerge from hyperspace) and the planet's primary space station. If you fly insystem direc...

Yaw mapping to joystick axis

If the ability to yaw is left in future versions, it would be nice if yaw could be mapped to a joystick axis, just as one can do so with pitch and roll now. And, of course, the yaw axis should respond to the "precision movement" [joystick] toggle that the other axes respond to. I am happy ...

Reference/Tutorial for ObjC programming?

I was wondering if those here who have had some experience writing software in Objective-C would care to recommend any particular references, books, websites or similar material for one new to ObjC to learn the ins and outs of the language and in particular the usage of the NextStep/GNUStep class li...

Gah, what next, lasers refusing to fire unless they'll hit something, then you're one step from having the computer do everything for you!

Sent PM, no response

I PM'ed Winston shortly after reading the initial responses to my inquiry, but he has yet to respond. Mind you, it's not a big deal, but I was wondering if anyone has seen him around in the past few days (here). I don't want to spam his PMbox if it's just a matter of waiting until the next time he l...
