I now get the landing sites showing on the scanner upon launch from Digebiti station, which is great. I get the flashing beacon and the landing instructions. But I fly straight through the beacon without landing. Do I need to do something else e.g. request landing permission? Did you get any comms ...

I would prefer to keep FS compatible with both planetfall v1 and v2 as the latter does not work for me. Can you try version 2.2 of PF when you get a chance? See PF thread for download links. Not sure what you are asking? Simply this: PlanetFall v.1 randomized the landing site, so that wherever you landed on the planet (there are no fixed points/docks in v.1) would be randomly labelled as the capital city, a field, a factory, a military base, etc . Presumably the above above needs to be amended somehow to reference Planetfall2? It should all be getting updated as part of the PlanetFall2 package. PlanetFall2.oxp does not work for me.
