I've not been on oolite for a while but I am hearing about a new version of it (1.73). Having had a look around I can't find a download anywhere for macs, so where would I find one? (I want to try out OSE)

Yes you were right that was just me not really paying attention. The Dragon ships DO need you to target something to fire at them.

Yeah the two navy starships need you to target hostile ships for their turrets to work, and the dragon just attacks any hostile ships, you don't need to target

But yeah I had tried targeting ships too
