Re: Retro BBC micro Elite
Well it took over a year, but v.5 is ready https://www.dropbox.com/s/xx1i6z6l9lxbwy5/EliteB_v5.zip?dl=0 An update that includes the Rinkhals, a robust ship often used by pirates. Larger suns appear larger. Small (pirate) ships are likely to overheat and explode if near the sun. Thargoids can't relea...

Re: Retro BBC micro Elite
The source files for Elite-B are all done in BBC Basic and built on BeebEm. The Elite-B v4 disc image is not scrambled in any way (other than the text strings' EOR #$23 business) so you can lift bytes for the assets from that. There are 26 ship data files, A-through-Z which (after some 6502 code) co...

Re: Retro BBC micro Elite
Hello KrocCamen, yes its been a long time for me too. I started work on a Elite-B v.5 a year ago, mainly to deal with jsBeeb only having 0.9 DFS which turned into a major pain but on the bright side I got another 100 bytes free and duly started filling them up with new code and a new ship. I see tha...

Re: Thought experiment: no currency
In the 1970's Star Trader only Class I and II worlds (Cosmopolitan & Developed) have banks on them. Classic Elite simplified this to a universal currency of credits with your account available at all GalCop worlds. One could treat them as only valid at GalCop stations, so trading at other places...

Re: Fuel Scooping
In Classic Elite on the BBC micro I recall the game-play started to get too easy once you had military lasers, so to increase number of kills per trading run (and save a small amount of money) I would sun-skim on the outward journey to encounter more pirates per trading run. This was the only reason...

Re: Retro BBC micro Elite
thanks hoqlinq, the Guide code doesn't have the Bulletin code (no room due to all the ship stats loaded), only the Docked code has it. So I need to patch the hole you fell through. The 1770 issue is probably related to some code on page &D, the same page as the NMI routines (eg disc controller)....

Re: Retro BBC micro Elite
I downloaded the v.4 from https://www.dropbox.com/s/zqov1w8wqustpl6/EliteB_v4.zip?dl=0 and sent the .zip and also the unzipped readme and the .dsd through https://www.virustotal.com/en/ Nothing exciting, except none of the scanners can recognize what dsd files are. I have also discovered that v.4 wo...

Re: Some thoughts on Missiles & ECM
One (rather player-centric) problem with missiles is the NPC close-quarters launch. NPCs have a tendency to launch missiles as a last resort, and when dogfights get up-close and personal, the NPC is usually getting hammered by the player. I am sure we've all been caught that way: taking a missile f...

I liked the switch-mode youtube one where he blames the Original '84ers for care-bear mode preventing ED from being the sociopathic PvP game he wanted. And the one where the Asp hits the booster button by mistake during landing

Re: "Not in the manual" - setting and canon in the eight cha
yes the manual refers to around 3100 AD, to specify AD does sound like knowledge of the Christian calendar is still known. Also Dark Wheel refers to flying over London of Old Earth, and mentions Earth quite a few times, so certainly the mother world is within recent history or perhaps even still acc...

A game so good that ...
Driving home and thinking about games that reach the exulted category - good enough to buy the computer to play it.
* Elite on BBC micro was in that category.
* No Man's sky - Will it entice me to buy a PS4?
Any other nominations come to mind?
