Cargo scanner
In Freelancer , you could scan cargo pods and ships to find out what they were/what they carried, so you knew if they were worth looting. Police and pirates would also scan you (and other ships) to see if you had any contraband/valuables they wanted. If you did, they would demand you drop it. (If yo...

Re: Oolite Darwin Awards
I'd just like to recommend a Darwin Award for the pilot of the adder who tried to scoop a cargo pod at the same time as I did. (Unfortunately I died not long after. I had almost reached the Geisgeza station aegis when up popped a squad of pirates - two pythons and two cobra-1s - popped up. I ran as ...

Re: Is it time to 'fix' the Anaconda?
I could even take more cargo contracts than total capacity by temporarily offloading my goods at a station so I had room to get more. This could prove problematic because I'd need to re-buy similar goods later before reaching the destinations. This has always struck me as a something of a flaw in t...

Re: Odd Wikipedia Article of the Day - Green children of Woo
I'd heard of the story (although I'm not English ... ;)) ... It is, I think, one of those weird stories that's just on the fringes of the utterly fantastical, and it's tempting to look for "explanations", for the real and explicable events which might have been built up and become the leg...

Re: The obligatory Star Trek Into Darkness Musings Topic
And why always hanging around the Earth? With a billion other places to go why do we always have the finale on the Earth? What happened to 'Boldly going where no man/one has gone before' ? It's like Dr. Who's obsession with Earth's recent past. It's lazy writing. Just got back from watching it. Whe...

Re: Space Marines 'trademarked' by Games Workshop?!
GW have done this for YEARS. It's the very reason I stopped buying their stuff - they think they own the rights to EVERY WORD used in their things. If you use the word WARHAMMER, for example, they will hit you with a law suit. Same with Eldar, Space Marine, Imperial Guard ...and so on. I'm sure my ...

Re: Didi you play Elite?
I was too young to play it when it first came out, but got it a few years later when Amstrad Action gave it away on their 100th issue. I played it loads, and then started thinking "how could this be better", so started trying to make my own "space trader" game in BASIC. (Didn't h...

Re: Oolite Darwin Awards
I've only just reinstalled Oolite after a long time not playing. On my very first trade run, I was closing in on the destination station docking slit. I'd made several abortive attempts to line up with the slit (I'd forgotten about the "go to the nave beacon first" trick), but now I'd got ...

Returning to OOlite after long absence - a few questions
Hi, I've just reinstalled Oolite after not playing for a few years, and have a few questions: 1) How does the Advanced Navigation Array calculate travel times? Specifically, why is the "quickest route" usually longer and less direct than the "shortest route"? For example, I was i...

Mining lasers as weapons
I've just installed Oolite this week, and have been playing it for the past couple of days. (Can I say: "Nice!" - I've been looking for a decent Elite game for a while). Anyway, back to my question: Are mining lasers any good as weapons? I originally played Elite years ago on my Amstrad CP...

Re: Suicide bombers
There is something I have seen a few times too many, and do not understand. I approach a station, go by the nav buoy not to look too suspicious, and then, out of the station comes a small ship, and crashes straight into the buoy. It is such a small target, that I would think any pilot could tilt th...
