I think the best way to commuicate is voip as this would help to combat a common enemy in flight. And text messaging when docked as speed is not as important.

The building block approach
That sounds like the best approach.
Maybe start with the 3D space travel on one planet and a limited amount of players. Once all problems have been over come then you can expand on that.

Not so difficult
There is a lot of open source development on this subject on the net
loads of information out there I normal program hardware so with all the graphics and gameplay software written. The network side would seem easy to me. I may have a try when I have finished my current project.

I think the best idea is to have one galaxy (too start with) Server software would produce the following: Market prices on planets Automated ships starfield each client computer would have to give the server x,y,z coordiante and angles, ship type, missles launched info. The original Elite was for the BBC Model B and in its day was cutting edge 3D on a computer with only 32K and a processor running at 1MHZ.
