Ad Astra

http://www.a-astra.com/screenshots/screenshots.htm Freeware... Frontier clone, I guess, except it's got a lot of procedurally generated planets and buildings and animals and things. SORT of Noctis-like in that reguard although not as advanced. Anyway, freeware, space trading and combat elements seem...

My problem with the space lanes is that they're sort of slow. And I don't mean this from a "I've been a gamer for two years and I need lots of speed" perspective. The original elite was faster than this. Anyway, as far as adding too much stuff in deep space, it runs the risk of slowing the...

But once you have to order wingmen around and manage energy levels of your fore and aft shields and decide how much energy can be spared for weapons, thats when its really looses it for me. i don't think x2 did that. in fact the flight seemed scaled back a bit to focus on the economic and trading a...

i want to see more emergent behavior in these space games. simple rules that have the capability to interact in complex ways, basically. for example, you aren't scripting quests or events, but writing a set of underlying behaviors for how the automata act and most importantly, interact. a very simpl...

Dogfights in Freelancer tend to amount to nothing more than a couple of minutes of FPS chaos, whereas a fight in Elite feels like a real test, victory is well-earned. with freelancer it's almost entirely a matter of numbers. whoever has more shields, health packs, and gunpower will win. you basical...

there's some new game out -- spaceforce or something -- that looks interesting. the ship designs dont do much for me but the screens of the inventory management and ship customization section look fascinating.

there is one problem i've noticed with alot of space traders in that a lot of them are almost exact clones of the elite sequels only with, say, a different setting. i guess there's nothing wrong with this but if you're not going to improve on the original, then why bother?

Get Space Rangers 2 through totalgaming, which is some... company affiliated with Stardock (Galciv guys). It doesn't have any copy protection, and they let you download it it as much as you want once you buy it. The download link on the official webpage doesn't have any starforce or anything either,...

Replacing the docking rings and the font is something I'd rather like. Arial or Impact or whatever it is doesn't... look right. Anyway, for docking, I'm thinking something like the rings, only boxes, and grey. Maybe with tiny windows mapped into them. The ring effect doesn't actually bother me for w...

yes, quite. i think this is sort of like what happened with the morrowind mod community, actually. in both instances the ability to make new content isn't simply a matter of making addons and expanding the game. it basicaly lets you make the world dynamic in ways that really cant gracefully be progr...

creating a seperate subgame on the oolite engine for the purposes of playing two save games against eachother in a deathmatch environment to test piloting skills and ship customization wouldn't be that difficult to do, i imagine. maybe instead of real multiplayer, the ability to import another playe...

i've played the original elite, i think, or at least some of the older versions (acord definitely,pc elite plus, the nes one, elite: the new kind which should be a spot onbbc clone?) and while i can appreciate what the game did, i think more recent games have gone far beyond it, and you can't really...

Ship designs.

this might be a bit silly, but i really wanted to talk about the ship designs in elite for a bit, just because i like them so much. i guess it's sort of odd that i like the ship designs so much, given that they're largely featureless geometric objects, but really, i think that's why i like them. the...
