Also hitting f6 whilst burning away from pirates or police thus pressing the i key will give symbols of government and tech-level in the surrounding planets. Possibly avoiding more of the unwanteds on your tail. That was exactly how I discovered it! Thanks to all posters. To all who offered advice ...

Galactic map - with data

I have just discovered a feature which I have never seen documented. If, in the local map, you press "I" (for information I suppose), then symbols are out against each system showing what tech level, type, political level etc it is. I am trying to work out a method of getting a screen grab...

I bought a homing beacon, which appeared as a weapon (looked like a mine). I deployed it, to mark the wreckage of a pirate, went back to the space station, refueled and re-armed.
