Elites - when did you last get your butt kicked?

With 624 kills I am now ranked as Dangerous. I've just completed the Constrictor mission but quite honestly I was rather disappointend by the encounter - I didn't even get a proper look at the thing! After a single sustained burst from my military laser I fired an ordinary missile (I meant to fire a...

No news of the Contrictor?

Knowing that this was coming up I took myself off to a system where I'd be able to swap my Python for a fully equipped Cobra. Sure enough I got the call after making my 256th kill and was told that the Contrictor was last seen at Reesdice. I immediately bought the Cobra and was there within half a d...

What ship to buy?

I've reached 'Competant' and have about 450,000 credits to my name if I trade in my fully fitted out Python. I want to obtain Elite status in the basic game i.e. without installing any OXPs. I swapped the Cobra for a Python so I could earn money quicker and I could now switch back to a Cobra an fit ...

20 years ago when I playing Elite on the C64 I started out keeping records - until I understood the patterns, then I stopped. I think what drink has done is an interesting excerise but the bottom line is: does it tell us anything that we don't already 'know'? Because of the way the galaxy data was/i...

DO not worry about servers in USA and Europe having a lag. There are ways well documented to handle these things. If you can give me a link to a good example of such documentation I'd be interested to read it. I recall an occasion where I (in the UK) was 'chatting' online to a guy in Poland and a g...

Ive only been here for just over a week so I'm no expert but you'll notice quite a few differences, mostly for the better, but don't rely too much on your past knowledge. Be prepared to relearn it becasue there are some nice new things you might miss otherwise. ;-)

I think you're going off at a tangent with the random number thing because while it might work for thing like asteroids it can't work for anything that's being controlled by players. The server would have to know the position of everything in the Ooniverse. HOWEVER each player would only need to kno...

Keeping track of what was for sale on 2000 systems wouldn't be a problem and could be set up on an SQL database with scripts on the server to alter what was available as things were being manufactured and used up on the various systems. The effects of players moving things from one place to another ...

That's useful to know.

But there are no 'cultural' differences then? Profit margins no better? Same kind of levels of tech available, that kind of thing?

Any point visiting other galaxies?

Are there any worthwhile differences between galaxies in Oolite? If I remember correctly, jumping from one galaxy to another on Elite for the C64 enabled you to escape having fugative status and start with a clean site. I think you also had to jump to complete one of the missions. Apart from that th...

Will proceed to just install everything. One the other hand, I'm having loads of fun with the 'basic' game and when I\ve got so used to it that I want something new to spice it up I'll have loads to choose from. If you get everything right at the start what will you do next? ;-) Also I know there a...

Re: Questions for a Returning User

Well it was tough 20 years ago, but back to the topic: 6. I use a Python Class Cruzer, which used to rock. Now I get killed by a Krait with a few shots. Whats up with that? Obviously that's an exaggeration because a Python is going to take more than a few hits to bring down... unless it's just taken...

I'm pretty new here so I can't say what might have changed in the last 6 months but as compared to Elite on the Commodore 64 some 20 years ago: Manual docking seems easier because you've got more visual clues. @lolwhites - you had it easy mate. You weren't allowed to dock on the C64 until you'd done...
